Lessons Learned: Era Of School Shootings

On July 26th 2018 we held a community training that was focused on the lessons learned during three school shootings that occurred over the past 10 years in different parts of the United States. The goal was to bring a cross section of our community together to focus on prevention and safety. We had over 220 people in attendance from various professions; EMS, Police, Fire, Social Workers, Politicians, Attorneys, Moms & Dads.

Our Speakers

  • Lisa Hamp: Survivor of the Virginia Tech shooting. Blacksburg Virginia, April 16th 2007.
  • Alissa Parker: Co-Founder of Safe and Sound Schools. Daughter was tragically killed at Sandy Hook Elementary on December 14th 2012.
  • Harris and Mandi Jaffe: Students / Surviovors of the Stoneman Douglas High School Shooting in Parkland, Florida. February 14th 2018.
  • Dr. Jennifer McCormick, Indiana’s 44th Superintendent of Public Instruction

    Resources

Their mission is to support school crisis prevention, response, and recovery, and to protect every school and every student, every day. The organisation was founded by Alissa Parker and Michelle Gay. Alissa and Michelle both had children that died in the Sandy Hook Tragedy.

Safe and Sound Schools offers a wide range of free programs and resources to help you improve the school safety in your community.

Learn more about the great work they do for our school community.

Shine MSD was formed by Marjory Stoneman Douglas drama students after the school shooting on February 14, 2018 to support victims' families and heal the Parkland community through the arts.

It is during our darkest moments that we shine the light. Following the tragic mass shooting that took place at Stoneman Douglas High School, the world came to know the students of this high school were a bit different. Some jumped to action in the political arena. Others turned their efforts toward the arts. LEARN MORE
